If you are looking for a light hearted, but clever romantic comedy and are interested in getting a better feel for the “Porteño” (Bs. As. city resident) culture check out the film “Medianeras” or “Sidewalls.” This film is quintessentially Buenos Aires, from the pedestrian taxi accident to the cigarette smoking doctor in the exam room. I can attest to its’ accurate portrayal of daily life here! The film cleverly uses the less inspiring attributes of Buenos Aires architecture and urban planning to unite the story line and perhaps our two lonely hearts in the city, but also serves as inspiration/frustration for our protagonista Mariana who is herself an architect.
The film stars the adorable duo of Pilar López de Ayala ( España) and the Javier Drolas (Argentina).
Medianeras is now available on Itunes or Amazon with English subtitles. Come back and leave a comment and let me know if you liked it!
These are some sketches + watercolors I snapped from graduating architecture students on display from the Universidad de Buenos Aires that capture an alternative perspective of the city than of that which we see in the film.
